Churchill War Rooms Tickets: Complete Buying Guide

This is the simplest option and the one most visitors book. You get timed entry to the War Rooms and an audio guide, so you can move at your own pace.

This combines a guided walk around Westminster with timed entry to the War Rooms. It is a good fit if you want more historical context before you go underground.

A small group guided tour with fast track entry included. Book this if you want a more structured, guide-led visit.

A full day trip that pairs the War Rooms with Blenheim Palace, including transport and a live guide. This is only worth it if Blenheim Palace is already on your list.

A guided Westminster-focused tour that includes War Rooms entry. This is a useful backup option if your preferred Tiqets time slots are limited.

Another walking tour plus War Rooms entry option. Worth checking when you want a guide-led experience but you are flexible about the exact route.

Booking online is the simplest way to lock in a timed slot and avoid the ticket office line. It is also the easiest way to compare standard entry vs guided tours in one place.

You can sometimes buy same day tickets at the entrance, but it is less predictable. On busy days, the remaining slots can be later in the afternoon.

Best for: last minute weekday visits when you can adjust your plans if your preferred time is not available.

Every ticket is linked to a specific date and time slot. Your booked time is when you should arrive, not when you enter the rooms. IWM guarantees entry within 30 minutes of your booked time, so you have a window to arrive without stress. For example, if your slot is 10:00am, you can arrive any time between 10:00am and 10:29am.

You cannot enter before your booked time. Visitors who turn up more than a few minutes early are asked to come back closer to their slot.

All visitors pass through a bag inspection before entering. The check is usually quick, but expect a short wait during busy periods. Backpacks are allowed inside, but you must carry them in front of you (not on your back) throughout the visit.

Walk-up tickets are available on the day, but advance booking is strongly recommended. On busy days, particularly weekends and school holidays, walk-up visitors can face queues of over an hour. Visitors with pre-booked timed slots are prioritised, so booking ahead is always the safer option.

The War Rooms are busiest between 11am and 2pm, especially on weekends and during school holidays. For a quieter experience, book the first available slot of the day. Fridays and Saturdays open at 9am (with summer early openings from June to August on all days), giving you a head start before the main crowds arrive. Late afternoon visits after 3pm are also noticeably quieter, and you can stay inside until closing time.

Your ticket is valid only for the date and time slot booked. You can arrive within 30 minutes of your booked time, and IWM will ensure entry within that window. Entry before your booked time is not guaranteed.

Tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable when purchased through the IWM website. Third-party providers may have different terms, so check the product page before booking.

Once inside, you can stay as long as you like until closing time (6pm daily, last entry 5pm).

IWM Members get free entry to Churchill War Rooms, as well as HMS Belfast and IWM Duxford. Membership also includes priority booking on selected events, 10% discount in IWM shops, and free entry to Duxford Flying Days.

If you are planning to visit more than one IWM paid branch during your trip, membership can work out cheaper than buying separate tickets.

Note that Churchill War Rooms is not included in the London Pass or Go City Explorer Pass. IWM Membership is the only pass-style option that covers entry.

IWM offers a guided tour called “The Secrets of Churchill’s War Rooms” that takes place before the museum opens to the public. A guide walks you through the key rooms and objects, sharing stories you would not get from the audio guide alone. The tour lasts around one hour, and you receive an audio guide afterwards to continue exploring at your own pace.

This is worth considering if you want a deeper experience without the usual crowds. The tour is intended for visitors aged 16 and over. Younger children may join but must purchase an adult ticket. Spaces are limited and booking in advance is recommended.

Third-party guided tours are also available through Tiqets, including options that combine a Westminster walking tour with War Rooms entry, or a fast-track ticket bundled with a guided tour.

Children under 5 enter free but still require a ticket booking. Children aged 5 to 15 need a child ticket. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Visitors under 12 receive a Family audio guide designed to be more engaging for younger visitors.

Churchill War Rooms does not have pushchair or pram parking, and there are no cloakroom or locker facilities on site. The underground layout and narrow corridors make pushchairs impractical, so plan accordingly if visiting with very young children.

Concession tickets are available for seniors (65+), students (valid student card required on entry), and visitors with a disability (proof of disability allowance required).

One free carer ticket is available per visitor with a disability. You may be asked to show documentation on arrival.

Churchill War Rooms does not offer a military discount. Serving military personnel and veterans can visit free on Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Sunday.
