Insider Tips

The entrance is not where you expect it

Churchill War Rooms is underground, and the entrance is at the bottom of the Clive Steps, not on a main road. If you are walking down King Charles Street, it is easy to walk past the turning. Look for the Clive Steps on the left-hand side as you approach St James’s Park. There is signage, but it is not as prominent as you might expect for a major museum.

Use Exit 6 at Westminster station

Westminster is a large station with multiple exits. Exit 6 puts you on the correct side for the shortest walk to Churchill War Rooms. If you take the wrong exit, you may end up on Westminster Bridge or facing Parliament Square, adding several minutes to your walk.

Store luggage at Charing Cross before visiting

Churchill War Rooms has no cloakroom, and suitcases and large bags are not permitted. IWM recommends Charing Cross Station as the nearest luggage storage. There are also third-party luggage storage services (such as Stasher and LuggageHero) at nearby locations. Sort your bags out before you arrive.

Avoid arriving during the Westminster rush

The streets around Whitehall and Parliament Square get extremely busy on weekday mornings (8:00 to 9:30) and evenings (17:00 to 18:30) with commuters and government workers. If your timed entry slot allows it, aim to arrive outside these windows for a calmer walk from the station.

Combine with a Whitehall walk

If you are walking from Trafalgar Square or Charing Cross, the route down Whitehall passes Downing Street, the Cenotaph, Horse Guards, and the Banqueting House. It is one of the most historically dense walks in London and takes only 10-12 minutes. Treat the journey as part of the experience, not just a way to get there.
